Astronomers are greatly confused about the fate of this large and expanding universe; their different opinions are based on the different ideas about the shape of the universe as follows:
The universe is like a huge balloon and will expand until it ruptures; this implies a “closed” universe, and the final “rupture” is called the (Big Crunch). The universe is not closed, but opened, and is expanding continuously and thus there is no end to its expansion, it is going to expand forever. The universe is formed of many “balloons”, each one expanding and each with its own doomsday. The universe does not obey the same physical laws that we know, and there may be other universes with other laws that we can never know.
The Reality in the Qur'an
This large number of different opinions among some of the most famous names in the world of physics and astronomy give us a good chance to prove the scientific miracle in the Qur’an. This is because Muhammad (peace be upon him), of course, was not an astronomer, nor did he come from a time of astronomers. In spite of this the Qur’an gives a clear idea of the end of the universe, which we can understand without reading the textbooks of Einstein, Max Planck, or Heisenberg, and as Muslims, we can select the right opinion according to the Qur’anic clear view as follows:
The Qur’an stated that the beginning was a forcible action that led to the creation and expansion of universe (as mentioned) and the expansion is continuous. The universe is expanding in all directions; this causes great tension in the heavenly matter, stated apparently when Allah Says:
“The uppermost heavens are about to be rent asunder (cracked) from their higher aspects” [42”5].
This “cracking” or “tearing” with the previously mentioned expansion gives a complete picture that the expansion continuously causes great tension all over the universe, especially the outer sectors that are actually about to be “torn” or “cracked”.
- In many verses the Qur’an mentioned that there will be a dramatic end to the whole universe and this will happen with a very vigorous accident The signs of this is the actual “tearing”, “Splitting” and “cracking” of the structure of the universe, and this causes a sudden release of the great tension that is found now. Allah says:
“And the sky will be rent asunder, for frail it will have become on that Day (of Judgement)” [69:16].
When we compare this case of sudden removal of all tension after the “tearing” of the sky with the greatly tensioned skies we have now according to Qur’anic indications, we know that the tension is caused by progressive expansion. In recent times, the tension is severe and very high and at a certain moment, the splitting and tearing is actually happening. Allah says:
“then heavens are split asunder” [84:1]
“When the heavens are cleft asunder and when the stars are scattered” [82:8-9]
“When the stars are effaced, and when the heavens are rent asunder” [77:8-9]
From these verses in the Qur’an we are sure that the great accident at the beginning of the end of the universe is “cracking”, then “splitting” then rapidly “wide splitting” of the heaven. This leads to a stopping of the “expansion” (mentioned in the other verses because the wide splitting removes the tension (mentioned in other verses) and makes the heavens “frail” (mentioned in the other verse).
After these dramatic events begins the terminal phase of the universe, the phase of great collapse under infinitive gravitation and attraction, this force which was resisting “expansion” before cracking the sky (the phase of collapse mentioned before). So this “big crunch” ends by returning everything exactly as it was in the beginning.
So, the Qur’an refutes the opinion that there is no end to the universe, and refutes the theory of different universes with different laws because Allah says:
“He (Allah) who has created seven heavens in full harmony with one another, no fault will you see in the creation of the Most Gracious” [667:3]
According to this verse, the whole universe is controlled by similar laws with no disturbance and disharmony. It refutes the theories of several dooms-days for several universes, because the Qur’an speaks of a single dooms-day encompassing the whole universe.
Thus, we find that the simple Muslim, with a very simple education, knows a surprising amount of the most modern astronomical knowledge. More than this, he is able to stand on a par with the greatest scientist’s inhuman history, in one of the most important scientific discussions of our time: regarding the beginning and end and the shape of the universe. Moreover he can, with complete confidence, dispute (scientifically) the opinions of some scientists and agree with others.
These scientists such as Eisntein, Stephen Hawking, Heisenberg, Max Planck, Hubble, and others, are the leaders of the most important scientific revolution in human history. They reached their level of scientific and astronomical observations, spending several decades, worth of time and money. All the information that their research uncovered has been clearly and plainly present for 1500 years in this book (the Qur’an) which came to us through a man who could neither read nor write, from a nation which was mostly illiterate.
For those not believing in this book and the fact that it is from Allah, we ask them:
Who taught Muhammad the Big Bang theory?
Who taught him about the beginning and the end of the universe in this definite and highly scientific manner?
We must show this Qur’anic science to the world’s leaders in astronomy, and they must give an answer, bearing in mind that Muhammad was not an astronomer; neither was any of his people. No one in his period knew this amount of modern astronomical information; no one asked him about astronomy; he had no overt cause (in his mission to his people) compelling him to speak about astronomy.
Our question to everybody not believing in the Qur’an is: Why and how and from where did Muhammad get all this highly scientific information? If one thinks about it before answering, one simply and inevitably will understand what we mean by the “Scientific Miracle of the Qur’an”.
The Qur’an has hundreds of verses that discuss scientific information of all kinds; medical, geological, zoological, biological, geographical, etc. Much of this information has now been researched, and after simple reading we will know without a doubt that there are hundreds of scientific miracles in the Glorious Qur’an
