Nowadays we often hear that the wife leaves for work and the husband spends the day relaxing at home with the excuse of not finding employment. Of course, there are some legitimate cases whereby all attempts to find employment failed.
In some instances, the husbands have become parasites in the true sense - depending on the wife to provide entirely, including doing the shopping. Surprisingly the wife agrees to the spouse's attitude and behaviour. She supports the house providing everything that a man ought to be doing. In a recent absurd case handled by our Social and Welfare Department, the cause of the marital dispute was determined by the fact that the husband did not work for eight long years and was supported by his loving wife. She made great sacrifices even working during week-ends to make her marriage work. She supported and lived her life with her spouse through thick and thin. Despite her passionate ways, her husband was not in the least concerned and took advantage in that he secretly gambled away her money and entertained himself with other women.
Islam has identified the portion of both sexes - this has nothing to do with a woman earning within the parameters of the Shariáh. The man is empowered with the responsibility of providing for the home - seeking sustenance, providing shelter, food and clothing for his family. Similarly, the woman is empowered with the responsibility of looking after the household chores, attending to the children, looking after her husband's property and fulfilling the husband's wishes to the best of her ability.
It is indeed sad to witness the gross injustices and un-Islamic behaviour of some Muslim men towards their wives. Remember everyone has to face the court of Allah Taãla one day and no one will avoid that day.
