Islam has honoured man throughout his life right up to his death. Every part of the human is holy and held in high esteem. Even if a limb of the human is amputated due to medical reasons then too respect has to be shown by burying the limb.
It is often some custom among people to open the face and sometimes (rarely) show the wounds of the dead body to members of the family. This is unnecessary and contrary to the Sunnah. Showing respect and burying our dead with dignity is the duty of one Muslim to another. Showing the face of the dead person especially he/she who had been inflicted with some wound on the face is not permissible. This injury requires to be kept intact by means of cotton wool, etc. Therefore, it is best not to open the face even before the immediate family.
