  COVERING THE HEAD

A common sight today is to find Musallees with their heads uncovered. While some do not wear Topee for fear of upsetting the hairstyle, others feel it is not necessary since 'Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) did not cover the head in Salaat'.

At the outset, it should be noted that the Topee is from among the attire of the prophets and the Auliyaa - pious and God-fearing people. The practice of the illustrious Sahaaba is sufficient proof that they covered their heads all the time. It is reported by Abi Kabshata that the companions of the Prophet (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) always covered the head with a Topee which sat flat on the head. (Mirqaat vol. 9). It was also a constant practice of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) to wear a Topee and a Turban. He wore the Turban on top of the Topee. The only time Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) was seen bare-headed is during Hajj in the state of Ihraam. In a number of Ahaadith, it is reported that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) wore a white Topee.
Without quoting the numerous Ahaadith stating the Sunnah of wearing the Topee, it will suffice to say that Muslims must follow the beloved Sunnah of Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam).
Hadhrat Shah Abdul Qaadir Jilani (RA) says: 'One should not uncover one's head which the righteous and cultured men keep covered.' (Ghunyatut Taalibeen, vol. 1 p. 13)

Allamah Jawzi says, 'A wise man's natural feeling is that bare-headedness is a disgrace, immoral and an uncivilised way. The Shariáh ordains bare-headedness only during the state of Ihraam (Hajj pilgrimage) - because that is a peculiar occasion of expressing one's utmost humility and humbleness before one's Lord.' (Fataawa Rahimiyyah, vol.3 p. 154)
